Do You know How To Create A Marketing Strategy For Your Business?

Business marketing is so much more involved in this Digital age. There are so many platforms and seemingly so much to do. So how do you not only develop, but actually STICK to a marketing strategy for your business?
This question is WHY the focus here at Marketing Leap this month is strategy and planning for the next year. I am a firm believer that if you don’t have an end goal set up, and steps in place to track your progress, you’re not going to get where you want to go.

Marketing Strategy For Your Business

Peter Drucker quite famously stated that “the aim of marketing is to know and understand your customer so well that your product or service fits them and sells itself”.
Which is WHY, our first question when it comes to marketing is who is your ideal client? Strangely enough it is often an incredibly hard question for a lot of business owners to answer.

The aim of marketing is to know and understand your customer so well that your product or service fits them and sells itself Click To Tweet

Once you know WHO your ideal clients are, it is so much easier to discover WHERE they hangout online. (If you would like to know where your ideal customer is based on demographics click here for a great infographic that we spent quite a bit of time researching)
Why do we start with AN ideal client and NOT everybody? You can’t tailor your message, or focus your marketing trying to speak to everybody. Just like you simply can’t tailor your service to a one size fits all. You can try, but you will waste more time trying to please everybody and getting NOTHING done! So knowing who your ideal client is a major part in STARTING your marketing.

Also, having a targeted audience makes creating authentic and emotional connections so much easier. We are all so busy, your clients STATISTICALLY have the attention span of less than a goldfish. So, connect emotionally. Build the relationships. Develop the ‘know, like & trust factor that will cut through the social media noise and show HOW you serve your ideal client. It’s not selling. Marketing is all about how you serve them and how you make their lives better. It is marketing your service so that it sells itself. So that when your ideal client stumbles across you, sees an ad or a post that you do, their first response s… “OMG I need to work with that person. What they have is exactly what I need right now!”

The next element of a marketing strategy for your business, is sticking to your zone of genius and outsourcing the rest. Let’s face it, you went into business because you have a passion for something and you love what you do. Not because you wanted to spend your days doing email marketing or learning the intricacies of Pinterest, or YouTube, or SEO.  (If you need a cost effective Social Media Service, click here to see what we offer!)

As a business owner, you need to focus on sticking to what it is that you know, and what you’re good at, because that’s where you make the money. From there, outsource the tactics you don’t NEED to learn.
However a caveat, when it comes to marketing, you DO have to understand how things work, for no other reason than when you do employ staff, pay contractors, or even engage a marketing company just like Marketing Leap, you know what KPI’s to set. You know the indicators you need to be checking for, what insights to watch so you can check the work that they’re doing.

Finally when it comes to marketing strategy for your business be CONSISTENT! Set out the MAJOR end goal, then set goals for each marketing tactic that you’re using.

  • Have your overall strategy planned
  • Know where you are going to be hanging out online
  • Know when you will be posting your content, connecting, and building relationships

So what is a Marketing Tactic? Every different Social media platform is essentially a tactic. Facebook, is a tactic. Facebook Lives, are a tactic. YouTube, content marketing, (blogging) email marketing. Instagram. LinkedIn. They are all different tactics that you use for marketing your business and services. They are the tactics you use to show how well you know and understand your customer and HOW your product or service is the perfect fit for them, so much so it sells itself.

Again, with each tactic the process remains the same. You  start with the end mapped out. When you show up on Facebook you have a strategic plan and everything is mapped out. Whether that result is to:

  • to increase engagement with your clients,
  • increase their leads.
  • get in front of so many more hundreds or thousands of people
Each marketing tactic should start with the end goal mapped out Click To Tweet

Remember, if you don’t know what your end results need to be, how are you ever going to achieve it?

So as a recap …

  • Know WHO your ideal customer is
  • Learn WHERE they hangout online
  • Stick to your zone of genius and outsourcing the rest, so you’re not wasting time. Because as a business owner, your time is your most, most precious commodity.
  • Be CONSISTENT
