YouTube is one of the best ways to get videos in front of your target audience. BUT to be successful you need to have a YouTube Marketing Plan. Over 2 billion people log in to YouTube every month, and they watch a billion hours of video every day. Besides being a social media platform and source of entertainment, YouTube is a search engine. Because of YouTube’s easy-to-use interface and the surge in popularity of video content, it is the second-most popular search engine behind Google.

YouTube has over 3 billion searches per month, more than Bing, Yahoo, AOL, and Ask.com combined. YouTube’s user base would rank third in the world if it were a country.

Preparations for YouTube Marketing Plan

In setting up your channel, there are 3 things you need to remember:

  1. Find your niche.
  2. Setup your channel and find relevant topics.
  3. Pay attention to your YouTube SEO.

It doesn’t matter what platform you’re using. A lot of things with marketing are very much the same. Although we’re doing so much online and digital, the fundamentals of marketing remain unchanged. There are billions of hours of watching time and billions of people logging in every day, so there is no need to talk to everyone. If you can get 0.0 fraction per cent of those viewers, your channel can grow exponentially and speak to your ideal audience.

Find your Niche

Why are you creating a YouTube channel in the first place? Think about its purpose.

  • Is it to drive traffic to your website?
  • Would you like to sell a course or some products?
  • Do you want to build your brand?

It’s important to figure out why you need to set up a channel before doing anything. From there, you need to find out who you are speaking with. It won’t take them long to decide if they want to spend their time with you, listen to you, or work with you. Hence, you have to be very clear about whom you are communicating with.

Setup your channel

Setup your channelLike many other social media sites, YouTube is also a social media platform. It’s all about the presentation. Setup your profile photo, logo, and channel banner with the correct dimensions. When creating your banner, make sure the information appears in the right places, regardless of where people are searching – phone, tablet, desktop, or TV.

Your banner must tell people about the channel and who you are. If you go over to my YouTube channel, Marketing Leap, you will see the banner saying Digital Success TV, which tells you I uploaded videos every Saturday. You can also get an idea of the topics I cover. Again, don’t just take my word for it. Have a look at some of the larger channels out there and observe how they do things their way.

We all value time, and people don’t want to guess what you’re talking about, so they’ll read it. Use this chance for your audience to stay and watch a couple of videos if they find them appealing. Especially if you provide value, they might consider subscribing to your channel.

Thumbnails also catch the attention of your audience. The thumbnail summarises the content of the video enticingly so that people can’t ignore it. Your brand needs to be consistent. You need to let people know that they have landed on your page if they go from your website to your YouTube channel or from Facebook to your YouTube channel.

Find relevant topics

YouTube is one of the best places to find out what is currently trending. You can determine what you need to talk about. A general recommendation is to do research. Look at a few of the top 10 channels in your niche or those doing something similar to what you want to do. It will also help you figure out what sort of videos and topics your ideal client will want to see.

In the same way that you decide your niche, we need to decide what type of content we’re going to produce for you. It’s a good idea to have a plan for implementing this. With YouTube, one of the biggest things is to create evergreen content, and then maybe even to create a video or two that might be a viral video or something that gets a lot of traction.

Do you intend to make it educational?

Will it be inspirational?

Pay attention to your YouTube SEO

Pay attention to your YouTube SEOSince YouTube is not just a social media platform, ensure that all your videos are optimised, from the title, descriptions, to the video’s file name and your script. One thing that I found to be successful with mine is the education series. It teaches people how to do a certain aspect of marketing and how to set things up.

A lot of effort should go into choosing the right keywords and making sure those keywords appear in your title and description. Additionally, TubeBuddy and VidIQ are tools you can use. You can start doing your research, finding the keywords and setting everything up with these tools.

Then you can start showing your videos. Promote your videos beyond YouTube. You’re setting yourself up for failure if you post a video and then wait for people to discover it. Once you’ve uploaded your video to YouTube, start sharing it on social media. You can also repurpose your videos into blogs, social media content, or even your newsletters.
